Balance
Balance, Aylin Kohan, acrylic and fabric on wooden figures, photography.
This project is very personal to me and one of my favourite art pieces that I have ever done. In short, it is the representation of my culture and the significance it plays in my daily life. The wooden mannequin on the left represents the national culture I grew up in before moving to Canada, which is Iran, while the mannequin on the right represents my own personal aesthetic. It was very important to me to have water in the background behind the stones, because the water represents life and the unknown. In a way, one goes out into the unknown carrying their own personal and national culture and affecting life in their own specific way. That is also why I have flowers at the very front accompanying the mannequins, because each person blooms in their own way and leaves their own special mark on the world.
